Family Free/Reduced Breakfast and Lunch Application

Effective July 1, 2005 school divisions are required to use a household application to determine eligibility for free/reduced priced meals in the School Nutrition Programs. The application must provide the opportunity for the household to list the names of all children for whom application is being made. The school division is prohibited from requiring a separate application for each child attending school in the same school division.

Once approved for free/reduced priced meal benefits during a school year, a household will remain eligible for those benefits for the entire school year. Households are no longer required to report changes in circumstances such as an increase in income, a decrease in household size or when the household is no longer eligible for food stamps or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). This provision applies to students approved by direct certification as well as by application.

Anyone who received benefits during school year 2007/2008 must submit new application for school year 2008/2009. Previous year eligible applicants are given a 30 day grace period at the start of a new school year. The 30 day grace period for school year 2008/2009 will end after lunch on September 16, 2008. Please submit your application as soon as possible. Anyone in need of assistance for completing application may contact Patty Seale, Supervisor of Food Services at (540) 948-3780.

Prepayment of Meals

Prepayment of your child’s breakfast and/or lunch may be made for the week, month and even the whole school year. Students will give their money to the cafeteria manager during breakfast or lunch. The manager will then enter it under the student’s ID. Please remember that checks received must be put on student’s account, no change will be given. Your child will have a running balance and when he/she is running low the cashier will remind the student that he/she needs to bring more money. Any balance remaining at the end of the year will be carried over to the next school year.

Returned Check Policy

If the School Nutrition Program receives a check(s) for school meals that have been returned for insufficient funds, there will be a $10.00 service charge for each check.

Charge Policy

The first and second day a student charges a meal, he/she is told to remind their parents that they need to send in money for breakfast and/or lunch. The third day a student charges he/she is told the same thing and a phone call is made to the parents by either the Cafeteria Manager or the Supervisor of Food Services. The situation is explained to the parent and the parent is informed that if money is not sent in the next day his/her child will not be able to charge but will be given the minimum requirements for lunch. The requirement would consist of a sandwich and milk.
